Sand Valley Trails

A hiking and biking trail runs directly behind Monarch Cabin, providing access to the Sand Valley property. Beyond golf, Sand Valley offers an extensive network of trails through sand dunes, pine forests, oak savannas, prairie and restored habitat.
Songbird Trail
Difficulty: Moderate · 1.2 miles · ~40 minutes
A relatively easy 1.2-mile trail that winds through restored and remnant habitat, an intact red pine plantation and the landscapes surrounding Sand Valley. Look for the bird boxes along the trail, which are part of a songbird monitoring project. Trailhead behind Craig’s Porch, at the north end of Sand Valley’s driving range
Ridge Trail
Difficulty: Advanced · 2.5 miles · ~1 hr. 20 min.
A more challenging 2.5-mile hike following the ridge along Mammoth Dunes. Expect sandy terrain, pine forest, oak savanna and beautiful elevated views, including sections as much as 80 feet above the golf course. The trail starts at the south end of the Clubhouse and finishes at the north end near the bocce courts
Karner Connection Trail
Difficulty: Moderate · 1.5 miles · ~50 minutes
This connecting trail links the Ridge and Songbird trails through some of Sand Valley's most interesting natural habitat. It passes Karner blue butterfly habitat, red pine plantations and offers views of Lake Leopold. There isn't a standalone trailhead accessible directly from the road—you access it from either the Songbird or Ridge Trail. Sand Valley's map identifies both a north and south Karner Connection trailhead.

Buehler Ave. & Waterworks Rd., Nekoosa, WI
A roughly 1.75-mile natural-surface trail passing through wetlands, prairie, woods and along a stream. It's a good choice when you want a peaceful hike without committing to a major excursion.
NELL — Nekoosa Environmental Learning Loop

Cedar St., Nekoosa, WI
A little over three miles of nature and multi-use trails through wooded and wetland habitat. The area also includes an observation area and disc golf, making it an easy family outing.
Nepco Lake County Park
Travel Time: ~20 min
1410 Griffith Ave., Wisconsin Rapids, WI
A 125-acre county park along 496-acre Nepco Lake with hiking and biking trails, a beach, fishing and public water access. It's one of the easiest nearby places to combine a nature walk with a lake day.
South Wood County Park & Lake Wazeecha

Lake Wazeecha is a great all-around outdoor destination with beaches, boating, fishing, paddling and a 4.1-mile trail around the lake. There are also picnic areas and a disc golf course.
Sandhill Wildlife Area & Bison Byway

This should be one of Monarch Cabin's signature recommendations. The 9,150-acre wildlife area offers hiking, biking, birding, observation towers and the 14-mile Trumpeter Trail auto tour. The Bison Byway branches off the route and provides an opportunity to see Sandhill's captive bison herd.
Petenwell Rock
Travel Time: ~35 min
19th Ave., Necedah, WI
A distinctive sandstone bluff rising more than 170 feet above the Wisconsin River, with informal trails leading through the rock formations and forest to overlooks toward the river and Petenwell Lake. There are no official trails or trail markings, and the terrain can be steep, rough and slippery, so I'd recommend it for more adventurous hikers rather than casual walkers. There are small parking areas on 19th Avenue and near Highway 21 & 19th Avenue; the 19th Avenue access is generally the easier starting point.
George W. Mead Wildlife Area

One of Wisconsin's largest wildlife areas, covering more than 33,000 acres of wetlands, forests and grasslands. It's particularly good for birding, wildlife photography, hiking and quiet exploration.
Schmeeckle Reserve
Travel Time: ~40 min
2419 North Point Dr., Stevens Point, WI
A 280-acre natural area with roughly five miles of trails and boardwalks through woods and wetlands surrounding Lake Joanis. The visitor center makes this especially good for families.
Standing Rocks County Park
Travel Time: ~45 min

A 524-acre recreation area offering hiking, mountain biking, disc golf, swimming and winter activities. The mountain-bike trails range from easier family-friendly sections to more technical terrain.
Rabbit Rock Wayside
Travel Time: ~45 min
1159 State Hwy. 13, Friendship, WI
A quick roadside stop featuring a distinctive sandstone rock formation left behind by the glaciers. A short rustic trail circles the formation, with the option to scramble up onto the rock for a closer look. This is more of a short nature stop than a traditional hike, but it's a fun addition when exploring the Roche-A-Cri/Friendship area.
Powers Bluff County Park
Travel Time: ~45 min

One of the highest points in Wood County, with hiking, mountain biking and scenic views. Winter brings snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, tubing and fat-tire biking.
Roche-A-Cri State Park
Travel Time: ~50 min
1767 State Hwy. 13, Friendship, WI
Climb the stairs to the top of Roche-A-Cri Mound for sweeping views of the surrounding countryside, then explore the hiking trails and unusual Native American rock-art site. It's a great half-day nature outing.
Buckhorn State Park
Travel Time: ~55 min

Set on a peninsula extending into the Castle Rock Flowage, Buckhorn offers hiking, paddling, fishing, swimming and wildlife viewing. It's an excellent choice for a full day outdoors.
